Compound finance withdrawals do not reverse completed reward claims

Compound finance does not undo a completed reward claim when you withdraw supplied assets or repay borrowing. In Compound III, those operations change your lending position, while a separate contract handles reward payments. Closing an eligible balance ends its future participation without erasing previously recorded accrual. The available exit depends on your debt, collateral requirements, and whether the protocol permits the operation. A successful claim also does not settle outstanding borrowing.

Eligible participation and the records an exit leaves

Compound III reward tracking follows eligible base-asset supply or borrowing, with separate configured speeds and minimum aggregate principal conditions. Collateral deposits alone do not establish reward participation. When a base balance changes, the protocol updates accumulated tracking using the previous balance before recording the new principal. That distinction explains what survives an exit: closing the balance changes future accrual, while earlier tracking remains associated with the account. To verify a reward payment, check the rewards contract's RewardClaimed event for the source account, recipient, token, and amount, alongside the token transfer. Transaction confirmation alone is insufficient: a claim can succeed without paying anything when no rewards are owed.

Can withdrawing assets cancel a completed reward claim?

Withdrawing assets cannot cancel a reward transfer that the rewards contract has already completed. CometRewards subtracts the account's recorded claimed amount from its converted accrued amount when calculating unpaid rewards. An ordinary withdrawal does not reset that accounting or collect previously distributed tokens from the recipient. Sending another claim transaction therefore does not make an earlier payment available again.

The completed claim remains part of the transaction history even when the recipient later transfers those tokens elsewhere.

Repayment and withdrawal close different balances

A Compound III borrower closes debt by supplying the market's base asset, including the interest owed at execution. Withdrawing collateral reduces the assets supporting that debt; it does not repay the loan. The permitted withdrawal amount depends on the collateral that remains and the applicable borrowing constraints.

A supplier without borrowing instead withdraws the supplied base balance. Available protocol liquidity and the withdrawal pause state still matter. An account can have a positive balance without every attempted withdrawal being executable immediately.

The base-asset withdrawal function also supports borrowing. An amount exceeding the positive supply balance can create debt if collateral and minimum borrowing requirements permit it. For a full supply exit, the intended amount is the supplied balance, rather than an arbitrary larger withdrawal.

Reward receipt does not change which of these operations the lending position needs.

Partial repayment can release some collateral without closing borrowing completely. Full repayment removes the debt constraint on collateral, although withdrawal permission and execution conditions still apply. Position closure therefore concerns the remaining supply, debt, and collateral balances. It does not require the account's historical reward tracking to return to zero.

A withdrawal paused after a completed claim

Consider a hypothetical Compound III account with an eligible supplied base balance, no debt, and a completed reward payment. Assume sufficient liquidity for its full withdrawal. The account state, liquidity, and pause settings in this comparison are hypothetical; no reward amount or return rate is assumed.

With withdrawals enabled, the account can withdraw its supplied balance. A successful transaction transfers the base asset out and closes that supply position. The earlier reward transfer remains separate, and the exit does not pay that reward again.

Change only the withdrawal pause setting to paused. The same withdrawal now reverts, leaving the supply position open and the earlier reward payment unchanged. The exit has stopped at the withdrawal restriction; a completed claim cannot bypass it. Once withdrawals resume, execution still depends on the account and market conditions then in force.

Can unclaimed rewards survive a full withdrawal?

Previously accrued Compound III tracking survives a full base-asset withdrawal, so closing the position does not itself forfeit that recorded amount. The base withdrawal operation updates accumulated reward tracking before storing the account's new principal. Future accrual from the closed balance stops, while a later claim can address an unpaid amount.

Payment still requires a supported reward configuration and a successful transfer from the rewards contract. Preserved tracking alone does not guarantee payment availability at every future moment. The contract must have the tokens needed for the transfer, and its claimed accounting must leave an amount owed. Claiming and withdrawing therefore have separate completion conditions.

Does disconnecting a wallet revoke its permissions?

Disconnecting a wallet does not revoke the on-chain permissions that an account previously granted. Compound III stores manager authorization separately from its balances, and an owner can remove a manager through the allow operation. Token allowances also belong to their respective token contracts. Closing a position does not automatically remove those permissions. Conversely, removing permission changes future authority; it does not undo an operation that a manager already completed.

Compound v2 uses a separate exit operation

Compound v2 distinguishes leaving a collateral market from redeeming supplied assets. The Comptroller's exitMarket operation removes that market from account liquidity calculations, subject to its checks. Redemption instead exchanges cTokens for the underlying asset. Borrow repayment reduces debt through the relevant cToken contract. These operations address different parts of the position, so an interface label such as exit needs that version-specific context.

A successful market exit alone does not establish that supplied assets have returned to the wallet. The account can still hold cTokens after removing their collateral role. Reward claiming also has its own mechanism in v2: claimComp handles COMP distributions. A MarketExited event records collateral-market membership changing, rather than a reward payment or redemption.

Compound finance: common questions

Can returning reward tokens to CometRewards reopen a completed claim?

Sending tokens back to CometRewards does not automatically reopen your claim. A token transfer into the contract does not reset the claimed amount associated with your account and market. That transfer therefore does not make the same reward payable again.

What happens if my Compound III repayment exceeds the outstanding debt?

Supplying more base asset than the outstanding debt leaves a positive supplied balance after repayment. That remaining balance earns supply interest under the market's rate model. Repaying with excess therefore changes the account into a supplier instead of leaving its base position empty.

Will redepositing after an exit restore my previous reward rate?

Redepositing into Compound III does not guarantee the same reward rate as before. Future tracking depends on the applicable supply or borrow configuration and aggregate principal during participation. A new balance does not recreate the earlier market conditions or make previously claimed rewards payable again.

Does claiming rewards to another recipient transfer my lending position?

Claiming Compound III rewards to another recipient transfers the reward payment, not the underlying lending position. The source account retains its supply, borrowing, and collateral obligations. Choosing a different reward recipient therefore does not move the debt or release its collateral.

Why can a Compound v2 redemption transaction confirm without returning assets?

A Compound v2 redemption call can return a protocol error code without reverting the entire transaction. Transaction confirmation alone therefore does not prove redemption succeeded. The operation's return value, emitted events, and resulting balances distinguish a successful redemption from a confirmed unsuccessful call.

Is a paused Compound III withdrawal proof that reward claims are paused too?

A withdrawal pause does not by itself establish that reward claims are unavailable. Comet checks the withdrawal pause for withdrawals, while the separate rewards contract executes claims under its own conditions. A claim still needs a supported configuration, an unpaid amount, and a successful token transfer.
